The Cairo Centre for Strategic Studies (CCSS) announced that professor Elwi Shehab, the special envoy of the president of Indonesia and former foreign minister, won the Imam Mohamed Abdo International Prize in its first round for 2020.
The CCSS stated on Wednesday that "The award bears the name of one of the world's leading figures of Islamic thought in the modern age, who is the Egyptian Mufti, Imam Mohamed Abdo.
"Imam Mohamed Abdo was the undisputed pioneer of the first Islamic renewal, and his works contributed to the process of religious reform throughout the Islamic world from Jakarta to Dakar. It also gave the legal and mental foundations of the moderate approach, as a framework for the idea and movement in the Islamic countries."
The head of the CCSS Ahmed El-Meslmany said, "Professor Shehab is a prominent Asian thinker and politician. He constantly works on the comprehensive confrontation of terrorism and religious extremism."
Shehab is an Indonesian thinker and politician, with outstanding contributions in the field of Islamic thought, and he is influenced by the moderate Islam of Al-Azhar. Shehab is a graduate of Al-Azhar University and has obtained more than one master's and doctorate degrees from different universities. He worked as a visiting professor at Harvard University.
In 1994, he became a minister in the government of Indonesia, and in 1999 Shehab became minister of foreign affairs. In 2015, he visited Egypt and met President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi as a special envoy to the president of the Republic of Indonesia, where he praised Cairo's efforts to renew religious discourse, stressing that Al-Azhar is the symbol of moderate Islam in the world.
Shehab is scheduled to deliver a lecture at the CCSS in Garden City, Cairo, on his first visit to Egypt. El-Meslmany will hand over the awarding plaque to the Ambassador of Indonesia in Cairo.
The CCSS is an Egyptian think tank concerned with Middle East and world affairs.
